How to Reduce Furniture Returns on Your Shopify Store
Furniture returns are expensive and damaging. Most come down to three fixable problems — here's how to address each one on your Shopify store.
Furniture returns are brutal. The product is large, shipping is expensive, and the restocking process is labour-intensive. A single return can wipe out the margin on three or four sales.
The good news: most furniture returns are preventable. They typically come down to three problems.
Problem 1: "The colour looked different on screen"
This is the most common return reason for upholstered furniture. The customer ordered charcoal and received something that reads more as dark grey. Or they ordered blush pink and received something that looks more salmon in person.
The fix: Show colour options as accurately as possible. This means high-quality photography with accurate colour calibration, and using multiple images that show the product in different lighting conditions. If you use AI colour visualisation, pair it with clear disclaimers about screen variance (most apps include this).
Problem 2: "It didn't fit"
Customers underestimate how large furniture is in a physical space. A sofa that looks proportionate in a product photo can overwhelm a small living room.
The fix: Always include precise dimensions — width, depth, height — in a prominent location on the product page, not buried in a tab. Include a "what fits in your space" guide. Some merchants add a room size recommendation table.
Problem 3: "The quality wasn't what I expected"
Product photography often makes furniture look more premium than it is. When the product arrives, customers feel misled.
The fix: Include close-up detail shots of fabric texture, stitching, legs and hardware. Real customer photo reviews showing the product in actual homes are more trustworthy than studio shots. Be specific about materials in product descriptions.
The return rate benchmark
A well-optimised furniture Shopify store should sit below 5% return rate. If you're above 8%, at least one of these three problems is significant. Start with colour — it's the fastest to fix and typically has the biggest impact.
